Stop researching behind a screen: A case for fieldwork with people who have no time for you

talk

In a research world increasingly dominated by remote calls, AI tools and synthetic users, in-person fieldwork has become a rare but highly valuable UX capability. Maria Zielinska believes that it's one of the most valuable skills a researcher can develop.

Drawing on practical experience from studies across complex services, this hands-on session will equip researchers with practical, battle-tested field tactics, and empower them to step out from behind their screens and reconnect with real-world messiness.

This session is perfect for UX and design researchers who want to strengthen their practical fieldwork skills, or anyone looking to make a stronger case for in-person research within their organisation.

You will learn:

  • How to make the case for in-person field research and articulate the rich value it can add
  • How to plan and run fieldwork with confidence, including building psychological safety for participants and researchers
  • How to recognise when field research is the right approach, and when remote methods may be more appropriate

Maria Zielinska is a Design Researcher dedicated to meeting the users where they are. Her passion lies in co-designing products and public services that strengthen community resilience and local collaboration. Her experience spans healthcare, energy, media, and transport.

Throughout her career, Maria has partnered alongside clinicians, educators, community workers, and sustainability leaders to create interventions that don’t fit neatly into a traditional research plan.

Outside work, Maria is usually found exploring hiking trails or on the salsa dance floor.
